Health
Insurance
As everyone has been hearing lately on TV
concerning Health Care there have been questions as to how it will affect us.
While at this time no definite legislation has been presented, many different
options are being talked about by Congress. Also many different rumors,
falsehoods and scare tactics have been spread by those opposed to a National
Health Care Plan.
As you have seen on TV a high portion of
the protesters to a Health Plan have been senior citizens, some of them
screaming and raising their fists saying “We don’t want government run health
care”
Everyone knows those same people now have
Medicare as their primary health insurance and have had it since age 65. …What do
they think Medicare is? Somebody needs to tell them it is a “Government run
Health System”. I would guess that not a single International Truck retiree
would complain about their Medicare coverage. In fact in the 20 years or so
that I have been the UAW Retiree Benefit Rep. I have never once heard a
complaint about our Medicare coverage.
Why some people think the Government
would be less efficient than the private insurance companies is hard to
believe. Why? According to Forbes, the
CEO of Caremark (Edwin M. Crawford)
made $ 69.66 million dollars last
year in total compensation. That’s
$ 33460.00 per hour. based on a 40 hr. week.
The
CEO of Aetna (Ronald A. Williams) made $30.86 million dollars in total
compensation for 2008.
That is $14, 836.00 per hour. based on a
40 hr. week. That was our yearly salary @ International.
This does not include any of the other
executives who also received bonuses and stock options in those 2 companies. Is
this more efficient? Plus, the
insurance companies must show a profit on top of the outrageous compensation to
executives. Every other Health Insurance CEO also made $millions of dollars
last year.
The UAW and a broad coalition of
progressive organizations are strongly supporting the House health care
reform bill and the bill reported by the Senate HELP committee. These bills
would provide enormous benefits to working families, including UAW members.
Not surprisingly, insurance companies and
various right-wing groups are mounting a campaign to block health care reform, to
counter their dishonest, disruptive scare tactics, UAW activists need to send a
strong message to members of Congress.
Please contact your representative and
senators right away by calling (877) 264-4226.
Urge representatives to vote for the
House health care reform bill that has been reported by three committees.
Tell senators to support the legislation
reported by the HELP committee.
Thanks for your efforts on this
critically important issue!
